Diverse Economies Compost Bin

This image represents the diverse economies of composting. On the surface are the large-scale and centralised composting 'solutions' that councils and other agencies usually look to (e.g., landfill, industrial composting, anaerobic digestion plants, and waste-to-energy plants). Below the surface are the multitude of other actants, sites and entities involved in composting, and that might be supported to enrich and diversify the economy of composting. This image was developed by Clytie Binder during the 2025 CEI Summer/Winter School. Clytie is a passionate advocate for community composting. Her recent projects include the Local Community Compost Alliance, a national organisation in Australia supporting and advocating for community composting. She has also been a recipient of a Churchill Fellowship and visited parts of Canada, the USA, Mexico and Cuba to explore education models and partnerships to support community composting.
